Fly.io: Building Computers for Agents
Company journey

https://www.delltechnologiescapital.com/resources/doubling-down-on-fly-io

Five years ago, we invested in Fly.io's seed round because we believed the company had a differentiated vision for how developers would build and deploy software. Today, we're excited to deepen that partnership by co-leading Fly.io's $25 million Series D alongside Intel Capital.

There’s a lot to be excited about with Fly right now. They’ve built a platform that earned a loyal and passionate developer following by helping teams deploy full-stack applications close to users around the world. More than 37,000 organizations now run production workloads on the platform. Fly has earned a reputation for combining powerful infrastructure with a remarkably simple developer experience.

Now the company is focused on a second, potentially much larger opportunity.

Computers for Agents
As AI agents become active participants in building, operating, and deploying software, they're exposing the limitations of infrastructure designed for short-lived, stateless workloads. Agents need persistent environments, secure connectivity, and durable compute resources so they can perform real work at scale.

In short, agents need computers.

That's why we're excited about Fly.io's vision of "computers for agents." Through new agent-native compute constructs like Sprites, developers can spin up and manage AI workloads that behave less like disposable processes and more like real systems. It's a fundamentally different approach that is resonating strongly with customers.

The market response speaks for itself. More than 8,000 customers are already building agent-native applications on the platform, and revenue from the company's largest agent-native customers has grown nearly 12x over the past year.

Scott Johnston Joins
The other news of the day is that Scott Johnston has joined as CEO. We couldn’t think of a better executive to take on the role at this inflection point for Fly. During his time as CEO of Docker, he helped transform one of the world's most recognized developer platforms into an enduring business. As Fly.io sees growing demand from developers building agent-native applications, Scott brings the experience needed to help scale that momentum.

He joins a company built by founder Kurt Mackey, whose vision helped make Fly.io a developer favorite and laid the groundwork for its expansion into agent infrastructure. Together, that foundation and Scott's operating experience position Fly.io well for the next phase of growth.

At Dell Tech Capital, we look for companies that anticipate where computing is headed rather than reacting to where it has been. Fly.io did that with distributed application infrastructure, and we believe it is doing it again with AI agents.

We're proud to have supported Fly.io from the beginning and are excited to help the team build the infrastructure layer for the next generation of software.

Congratulations to Kurt, Scott, and the entire Fly.io team on this milestone.
